Medical science has improvised with time in all fields including fertility. There are various successful methods of conception which help childless couples have children with ease and IUI is one of that procedure.
It is a treatment related to fertility which involves placing the sperm inside the uterus to help with fertilization. The significant aim of IUI is to subsequently improve and increase the chances of fertilization by increased sperm count that reach the fallopian tubes. This procedure gives advantage to the sperm by giving it a head start, but still the sperm has to reach and fertilize the egg on its own.
IUI is recommended only if the woman has
During normal sexual intercourse, only a small amount of sperm makes it to the woman’s uterus and into the fallopian tubes where fertilization takes place. Through Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) a large amount of the best performing sperms are inserted directly into the woman’s uterus, thus, increasing the chance of pregnancy.
The chance of success with IUI is enhanced if insemination is combined with ovulation induction using small doses of fertility drugs. These are taken by the woman, and the development of the follicles on the ovary is monitored with ultrasound. The insemination is timed to take place 36-40 hours after administration of another hormone injection which triggers ovulation.
On the day of the procedure, the male partner will provide a semen sample. A concentrated preparation of motile sperm is extracted from the semen sample in the laboratory. The sperm preparation is placed into the uterine cavity by the doctor / IVF nurse by means of a fine catheter inserted through the cervix. Generally, IUI is a painless procedure, which will only take a few minutes.
