Evaluation of the Couple

There are few events in our lives that are more heartfelt, cherished and deeply envisioned than having children. The decision of when to start your family is subject to conditions that are within and outside our control: who, when and if we meet our life partner, our job, feeling economically ready, feeling emotionally ready, our health, our age and other family obligations that defer our personal efforts to have children.

Both men and women often spend most of their early reproductive years avoiding pregnancy. Then, when they are ready to start their family and have a baby, it is reasonable to expect conceiving successfully by natural means within 3 to 4 months—and to share enjoyment in the effort. By 6 months of effort to conceive without success, we often begin to wonder and worry if there may be any kind of fertility issue.

An Evaluation for Infertility issues in couples mainly focuses on 5 Areas. They are

  • Egg: Ovarian reserve testing and ovulation.
  • Sperm: Assessment by semen analysis of sperm concentration, movement and shape.
  • Egg and embryo transport through the fallopian tube: Assessment by either a saline sonohysterogram with 3D ultrasound imaging or hysterosalpingogram.
  • Uterus or what our physicians often terms the “9-month rental unit”: Assessed by saline sonohysterogram with 3D ultrasound imaging or hysterosalpingogram.
  • Preconception screening: There can be one or more than one abnormality contributing to a couple experiencing infertility. In general, infertility is diagnosed as an exclusive female problem in 35% of couples, an exclusive male problem in 35% of couples, and a combined problem in 20% of couples and unexplained in 10% of couples. Issues such as abnormal egg structure, abnormal embryo development and abnormal genetic composition of an embryo may only be assessed and identified during treatment of In-Vitro Fertilization and pre-implantation genetic testing by 24 chromosome analyses, also referred to as comprehensive chromosome screening.

Counselling

Counselling has a major role to play when it comes to treating infertility. The couples are offered counselling sessions during the treatment process. This helps to evoke a transparency between the doctor and the patient. Apparently, the doctor has all his ears towards the patient’s problems and then comes up with solutions. The couple is made aware about their issues and the different options at hand that could be made available.

Infertility Counselling is important before a donor program or surrogacy

A proper infertility counselling session becomes more important if you are going for a donor program or surrogacy. Things become a quite complicated when it comes to using frozen or donated eggs, sperms or embryos. You might have a lot of questions that pops up in your head that needs to be answered. An infertility counselling session provides you with a platform to have all your queries and doubts answered before taking that final step.

Replacing Misconceptions with Positivity

Infertility is an issue that is not something to be discussed often, especially in India. This is basically due to a lot of taboos still associated with infertility and assisted reproductive techniques. This often fails to provide you with the chance of exploring your feeling or the sensitive issues that are bothering you. You tend to build a wall around you and feel secured being unsocial. This often gives birth to misconceptions. Having straight forward discussions will not only ease out things but also allow you to look forward to a plenty of positive options that went unnoticed. Apart from this, talking to an expert will boost up your confidence; you walk out as a completely changed person with a more positive outlook. All that you discuss with your doctor is confidential unless there are exceptional circumstances.
